Solar energy has been proposed the International Energy Agency (IEA) as the energy source of the future, predicting that Solar will be the chief source for the world the year 2050.
Of the Five largest solar installations in the world, 2 are in India and plans for further massive solar installations continue to develop. Among these plans, the development of a $9 billion solar farm in Rajasthan is paramount and the date for completion is set for 2022.
These massive new projects are going to require specialised infrastructure and steel is the one material that checks all the required boxes. The combination of strength and durability make them the perfect material for the structural components holding up the solar panels. Solar farms are often built in remote areas but are still home to extremely expensive infrastructure. For this reason, any material used in the construction of a solar farm has to avoid wear and tear and not require regular maintenance, for which steel is perfect. Solar farms will also require infrastructure for energy transmission, which will use steel cores, overhead power-lines and transformers. Transformers require a special kind of steel with specific conducting properties at its core.
